Toxic masculinity is a widespread term. It describes destructive behavior by men that is harmful to themselves and others. Toxic masculinity arises from perceived dictates of how a man should be, what he should feel, and how he should behave. This creates societal pressure that triggers and reinforces sexual violence, bullying, suicides, alcohol abuse, depression, and other mental illnesses in men. I want to counter this with a different term: Positive masculinity. What would remain if men were allowed to be men? To show emotions and empathy? When is a man a human being? When we start to break the patriarchal norms and men begin to move outside the rigid concept of masculinity, then they become free. I want to find and give back a piece of this selfhood in this project. For more courage to be oneself, more courage for masculinity.
